This is a proposal for an artwork piece I’ve created that
would be used to adorn the building of the Art Department itself (this is just a sample if this were the art building; I think it would be neat to have signage like this for each of the buildings that added color and function). It seems only apt that the blank canvas of
the artwork building be somehow enriched/beautified with something more
fulfilling, something that inspires those in the major and draw others to
it. This work work is designed to add color to the scenery but also be functional with both the text and imagery as to the purpose of the building. Opacity was used to bring out the texture of the wall behind the art and I did not make the work overly bright as I wanted it to more truly represent what it might look like in with paints used and the nature of the surface painted on. The piece I’ve created is just one
of many that might be put up (with more time I would create more rectangular pieces with complementary colors to the white background above and set them end to end). I’ve wrapped this particular piece along the wall (and
placed it up high) so that the “art dept” text and image added to the work
would be visible and practical to students coming from various directions. In creating researching work other mural work done, I think I was most inspired to create this piece after viewing the work by Agents of Change in London where they created very bright geometrical pieces for the wall. While I did not use their brightness levels in this work, I thought the use of white would be a nice complement to other bright pieces that could be aligned next to this piece as mentioned above.

I agree that your idea would be very functional. I think it would help a lot with new students navigating the campus. This is a very good idea.

Opacity definitely displays the texture of the wall. I would have liked to have seen a little more color but that's just my thought on art locations. Very tasteful and subdued but with color could have attracted my attention to the building and given me some thought about art. Good work on opacity. I can learn from this piece.

I like your idea of making the art department a little more exciting to look at from the outside. However, I also would prefer if there was a little more color added considering it is the art dept. Maybe fill in the letters with color or at least make the pencil and the pencil shavings colored. Other than that it's a great idea!

Very nice, you did a great job! I like that you can see the texture in the wall and it looks very realistic. -Abigail Argonza
ReplyDeleteThe image you selected for the building is good. I would have liked to seen a deeper color for the image. After all, you are calling attention to the art department building. The period under the vertical "Art Dept" is out of place.

This is a great idea of adding a design to the art building. This will definitely catch the eyes of students and make the or any building more attractive.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great concept. Like others have pointed out, the art is a little subdued considering it's the art department. -- John Zeller
ReplyDeleteI like your mural.. maybe using some darker colors would make it stand out more, and extending the color all the way to the end of the building. Great job!

I like your choice of lettering. I also like how the eye is drawn to the center of the piece. I can see why you left it empty, but I think it would have worked well with an image or color in the center. Vertical lettering would work well with shading and/or more color.

This mural looks good.I would like to see this myself. I would like to see comments from the Art Dept. staff and students. Mesa College is in need of design enhancement, what would be a better place to start then the Art Dept. itself._Tim Pipes
ReplyDeleteI love that you used a tool of the art department as a visual representation of it as well as a directional point. It operates wonderfully as a "you are here" arrow. The use of the pencil and shavings as well as the same font offers a sense of continuity. This is rather smart! Nice work!- Va Merritt
ReplyDeleteI like the sign for the art department building it helps people know were the art department building is.
